Category : World News

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said Tuesday it is investigating whether dosimeters worn by workers trying to contain the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant were manipulated to underreport their radiation exposure and may pursue prosecution.
The ministry meanwhile told Tokyo Electric Power Co. to have all workers, including subcontractors, whose dosimeter readings were suspiciously low to come in for checks to determine their actual radiation exposure.

Experts scoff at allegations of spying by diplomat Li

Category : World News

Some people in diplomatic and intelligence circles are skeptical about the spying allegations leveled against Li Chunguang, a diplomat at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo who fled Japan last month after rejecting a request to be questioned by the Japanese police.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Public Security Bureau handed over information on Li, a 45-year-old first secretary at the Chinese Embassy, to prosecutors for potential prosecution action on May 31, on suspicion that Li used a false identity to renew his alien registration card.

Court warning to prosecution

Category : World News

In the trial of former Democratic Party of Japan leader Mr. Ichiro Ozawa, who is accused of violating the Political Funds Control Law, the Tokyo District Court on Feb. 17 rejected as evidence the prosecution’s record of certain oral statements made by his former secretary concerning Mr. Ozawa’s alleged involvement in a false entry on a financial report for his political funds management body Rikuzankai. This evidence had been considered key.
Because the court identified illegalities involved in the interrogation that raised serious questions over the trustworthiness of the evidence, prosecution authorities should strictly examine whether prosecutors in general are conducting their investigations in a lawful manner.
