The first intake of 23 employees will combine residential sessions at the college with full-time work.

KFC will cover the cost of the college accommodation, while the tuition fees will be split half and half between the employer and the employee. It will also spend a further £40m on a makeover of 160 existing eateries to “create a more modern, welcoming environment for customers”. The expansion drive will be co-funded by franchisees.

This year’s openings will boost its total number of UK and Ireland restaurants to nearly 900. The group says it could eventually have a total of 1,200 in the two countries.

KFC, which employs about 24,000 people, has been adding at least 30 new restaurants in the UK a year and says it has seen seven years of same-store sales growth in a row.

Low-cost fast food restaurants have been prospering, despite the economic slowdown. McDonalds has reported improving sales in the UK and Domino’s pizza delivery service recently reported a 10% improvement in annual profits despite sales growth slowing due to January store closures caused by bad weather.

KFC UK, which is a subsidiary of Pizza Hut parent company Yum! Brands, came to Britain in 1965. The first store opened in Preston, Lancashire.

The brand was founded in the US by Colonel Harland Sanders in the 1950s.

Fast food

Food & drink

Restaurants

Ireland

Europe

United States

guardian.co.uk

Create, the award-winning ‘big society’ restaurant, closes down

Posted by admin | Posted on 17-02-2013

Category : Business

Tags: end, government, homeless, life and style, restaurant, social enterprises, the observer, uk news

Create restaurant in Leeds, praised by David Cameron and Jamie Oliver for its food and ethics, falls victim to harsh economic climate

A restaurant hailed by David Cameron as a “proud example” of “big society” in action has been forced to close as a result of the economic squeeze.

For a few heady months, Create restaurant lived out a northern version of Jamie Oliver’s social enterprise dream. It hired a star chef and offered great, reasonably priced cuisine that was fêted by critics: thinly sliced venison, partridge breast and sautéed girolles, all cooked and served up by a team partly made up of homeless trainees. The restaurant’s idealistic slogan was “Where good food and people matter”. The Good Food Guide praised the ethos, and comments from Downing Street were glowing. Last weekend, however, just months after it won Observer Food Monthly’s ethical restaurant of the year award, the dream came to an end. Create was forced to close after facing what it called “tough commercial realities”.

Its rapid rise and precipitous fall – in five years it grew from a sandwich-making venture in a Leeds night shelter for the homeless to a business with a turnover of more than £1m and branches across the north of England – is seen exemplifying the struggle faced by social enterprises: ethically driven firms that reinvest profits in a “social mission”.

Create said that despite winning plaudits for its food and achieving huge success in training disadvantaged youngsters – nearly two thirds of the 500 homeless trainees who passed through its kitchens not only found work elsewhere, but were still in a job six months after “graduation” – it had struggled financially. Attempts to widen its income by tapping into government welfare-to-work business had failed, despite its expertise and record. Chairman Norman Pickavance said its small size meant that it was effectively excluded from competing for contracts in the Work Programme, which is dominated by big firms.

Pickavance, a former director of Morrisons supermarkets, said: “We set out with high ideals. We were going to do this [train disadvantaged youngsters] by making money out of the restaurant. But the maths don’t work. In these tough times, selling food is not enough.”

Peter Holbrook, the chief executive of Social Enterprise UK, said that Create’s difficulties were shared by many smaller social businesses, especially those squeezed out of “toxic” public sector markets such as the Work Programme. He warned: “We are going to lose a lot of innovation, a lot of organisations embedded in communities that achieve outstanding results for local people.”

The government has insisted that it wants to support social enterprises by opening public-sector markets. Cameron called Create “a proud example of the ‘big society’ I want to see across the UK”, and made it the second ever winner of the No 10 “big society” award in November 2010. Pickavance said that Create had been filled with optimism after winning the award and meeting ministers. “You think, ‘Wow, this has really taken off.’ But it is all rhetoric and no money.” Create’s last set of accounts filed at Companies House show losses of nearly £1m in 2011, partly as a result of opening new branches. Create board member and the millionaire businessman Ged Syddall, who made a fortune from government apprenticeship schemes, wrote off £900,000 in loans to try to keep Create afloat.

Create says the closure is temporary while it carries out a restructuring, led by its chef, the former Harvey Nichols head chef Richard Allen. The new business model is expected to concentrate more on training and less on food. In a statement, Create said: “Throughout this journey our passion has remained the same, helping the hardest-to-reach people in our community, and with your support we have managed to support over 500 people. However we are not a charity. As a social enterprise we pay the same rents as any other restaurant chain but have had higher costs because of the extra support work we do.

“So in today’s harsh economy we have had to look really hard at how we can continue helping the maximum number of people while dealing with some tough commercial realities.”

A year ago the Observer‘s food critic, Jay Rayner, gave Create a glowing review, citing “one of the best-cooked hunks of skirt steak I have ever enjoyed”. He concluded: “It says much for the success of this place that by the end of lunch even this cynical old dog was ready to clamber on to his hind legs and applaud.”

But the first outward signs of trouble surfaced in November, when Create warned that the business was “on a knife edge” after suffering cashflow problems. It closed operations in Manchester and Sunderland, and made 16 staff redundant. Create’s difficulties follow the demise of another high-profile social enterprise training restaurant, the Hoxton Apprentice, which went into administration at the end of last year.

Even Fifteen, which benefited from the public exposure of a TV series and the celebrity patronage of Jamie Oliver, has said that the cost of training disadvantaged youngsters – at around £30,000 a head – makes it hard to compete in the cut-throat world of restaurants and catering.

Ethical business

Restaurants

Food & drink

Social enterprises

Food & drink industry

Leeds

Patrick Butler

guardian.co.uk

Asda should have saved its Christmas message of martyrdom for Easter | Deborah Orr

Posted by admin | Posted on 22-12-2012

Category : Business

Tags: advert, appreciates, effort, enjoy, guardian, hard, hotel, restaurant, retail industry, supermarket, supermarkets, they

It’s hard to believe that supermarket’s vision of a woman slaving over the festive feast really does create the perfect Christmas

This year’s crop of Christmas supermarket adverts created a minor controversy. Then, after she’d done the washing up, she was asked by her husband what was for tea, “love”. Both men and women complained of feeling “insulted” by this. Last week, the deals website’s founder barely survived a bid to throw him off the board

Last November, Andrew Mason, former music student turned internet wunderkind, was celebrating. Groupon, the daily deals site he founded and at that point “the fastest-growing company ever”, had just raised $700m and was being valued at $13bn. It was the biggest technology flotation since Google.

Mason had even been given the ultimate Google seal of approval, having recently turned down a $6bn offer from the search giant.

A year on, he is fighting to keep his job as the company’s share price falls to levels not even Groupon’s cost-conscious customers seem to find attractive. Even by the flash and burn standards of the internet, it’s a remarkable collapse.

Groupon’s board met last week to discuss Mason’s future. The company has lost more than $10bn in value over the last year. Sales are slowing, staff leaving. Independent directors and fellow founders are reportedly at loggerheads, pushing for Mason to go.

Even Mason admits the board is right to be pondering his future. “Here’s a news flash: our stock is down about 80%. It would be weird if the board wasn’t discussing whether I’m the right guy to do the job,” he said at a conference held by news site Business Insider last week. Clearly Mason still thinks he is the right guy: he survived last week’s board meeting, helped in part by shares that give him 10 times the votes of his peers. But the odds on his long-term survival are getting longer.

How did it all go so wrong? Groupon has suffered its fair share of self-inflicted wounds: there was an accounting scandal just after the flotation that spooked investors and its overly ambitious international expansion plans have backfired. But for Sucharita Mulpuru, an analyst at Forrester Research, the collapse was more fundamental and inevitable than that.

Mulpuru was an early critic of Groupon. “This IPO game isn’t about finding value, it’s about finding a greater fool who actually believes the valuation is true. Trust me, you will be the fool,” she wrote in a blogpost before the share sale. Needless to say, she’s not too surprised that things have gone so horribly wrong. “Anybody who looked at this objectively could see where it was heading,” she says.

Groupon’s enormous growth was fuelled by massive marketing spending and media hype, she says. “It was like a Fourth of July fireworks display: it all went off at once. It’s very difficult to sustain that.”

Academic research seems to suggest it’s not just shareholders who are getting burned. Dr V Kumar, executive director of the centre for excellence in brand and customer management at Georgia State University, and his colleague Bharath Rajan studied the impact of daily deal offers on three small local businesses: a restaurant that normally earned $2,500 in net profit per month; a car wash service that normally earned $6,000 per month; and a beauty salon/spa that normally earned $6,600 per month.

The researchers tracked the businesses for a year and the results, published in MIT Sloan Management Review, were damning. In the first month, the restaurant lost more than $7,000, the car wash service lost $6,300 and the spa lost $11,760.

Daily deal sites argue that such losses are to be expected and that they will be made up by repeat business from the new customers brought in by the coupon. But this wasn’t the case, according to Kumar’s report. Every new customer visiting the restaurant with the coupon resulted in a $14 decline in profits. For the car wash, the decline was $17 and for the beauty salon $39.

Based on their analysis, it would take the car wash service and restaurant 15

Nicholas Mockford was shot dead outside a Brussels restaurant nearly two weeks ago but details have only now emerged

Police in Belgium are searching for a gunman and accomplice who killed a British oil executive on the streets of Brussels.

Nicholas Mockford, 60, was shot dead as he left a restaurant with his wife, Mary, nearly two weeks ago but details of the killing have only just emerged.

Mockford’s employer, ExxonMobil, on Friday said his death was not linked to his work.

Belgian detectives have appealed for witnesses to the shooting. Police said two attackers wearing crash helmets tried to grab Mary Mockford’s handbag, and then slapped her in the face during the attack. They said four shots were then fired at Mockford.

One witness told Belgian television he twice tried to resuscitate the victim before an ambulance arrived. “I heard a noise, ‘tack tack’, I thought that was bizarre and went outside to look,” he told Flemish television channel, VTM.

“There was a woman lying on the floor on the pavement on the other side of the road. She was crying ‘help, help’. There was also a man lying on the street, next to a car. [The] woman shouts out it was a white van.”

Initially witnesses believed Mockford had been run over by the van outside the restaurant in northern Brussels.

“Suddenly he stopped breathing,” said the witness, who lived next door to the restaurant Da Marcello where the attack took place. “I resuscitated him, he regained consciousness and then he became unconscious again. I resuscitated him a second time and then the ambulance arrived. Only then did neighbours realise the man had been shot.”

He said Mockford had what appeared to be bullet wounds to his chest and shoulder and he also saw blood on his head. Police found four bullet cases outside the restaurant.

Detectives initially worked on the theory that the killing on 14 October might have been an attempted carjacking, because witnesses saw the couple walking across the street to their 4×4 vehicle before the attack.

One Belgian officer was reported as saying the attack was a “very strange case” which had been passed to federal investigators.

Exxon Mobil refused to answer questions about the case. It released a statement which said the killing had nothing to do with his work.

“We were shocked by the tragic death of Nick Mockford, one of our employees a fortnight ago in Brussels. Mr Mockford was a department manager at our office close to Brussels, but we have no indication the incident was work-related.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues and we are supporting them as best we can at this very difficult time,” the company said.

The victim was reported to have been born in Leicestershire but had been living for a number of years in Belgium and Singapore. He is believed to have worked for ExxonMobil since the 1970s and was head of marketing for interim technologies for ExxonMobil Chemicals, Europe, promoting new types of greener fuel.

He and his wife, who is Belgian, had been married for 15 years. His three adult children from his first marriage live in Britain, according to reports.

The Foreign Office is providing consular assistance to his family.

The investigating judge imposed an order on police preventing them from releasing any detail on the case, which police said was not unusual in a serious murder case. As a result, initial news reports were sparse. But on Thursday, authorities switched course and decided to enlist the public’s help, releasing a brief description of the crime.

Belgium

Europe

Exxon Mobil

Sandra Laville

guardian.co.uk

Lawsuit filed against New York ban on large sugary drinks

Posted by admin | Posted on 13-10-2012

Category : Business

Tags: court, group, guardian.co.uk, health, lawsuit, obesity, restaurant, state, world news

Lawsuit filed by soft drink makers and restaurant group says Board of Health overstepped authority when it passed regulation

Soft drink makers and a restaurant group filed a lawsuit on Friday seeking to block New York mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on large sugary drinks.

The mayor’s board of health overstepped its authority when it passed the regulation, the lawsuit said.

The plaintiffs include the American Beverage Association and the National Restaurant Association, along with a number of unions and pro-business groups.

The ban, the first of its kind in the United States, outlaws the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces everywhere in New York City except grocery and convenience stores. It is the latest step in Bloomberg’s quest to combat obesity. Previously, he has required chain restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus and banned trans fats.

The soft drink and restaurant industries claim the ban is an infringement of personal freedom and cite polls that show a majority of New Yorkers oppose the restriction. A legal fight has been expected ever since Bloomberg proposed the ban in May.

The lawsuit, filed in state court in Manhattan on Friday, asks the court to bar the law before it can take effect next March.

“This case is not about obesity in New York City or the motives of the board of health in adopting the rule being challenged,” the lawsuit said. “This case is about the board of health, appointed by the mayor, bypassing the proper legislative process for governing the city.”

The lawsuit claims the rule is “arbitrary and capricious”, because it applies only to some businesses and targets only certain types of beverages.

“Delis and hotdog stands are barred from selling a 20-ounce lemonade, but the 7-Eleven a few feet away remains free to sell Big Gulps,” the lawsuit said.

Several legal experts, however, have said they expect any court challenge to face an uphill battle, given the health department’s power to regulate eateries in the city.

Marc LaVorgna, Bloomberg’s chief spokesman, said the “predictable, yet baseless” lawsuit will put an even greater spotlight on an obesity epidemic that kills 6,000 New Yorkers a year.

City officials have cited public health statistics showing that 58% of the city’s adults and nearly 40% of public school students are obese or overweight.

The ban defines a sugary drink as a beverage that includes sugar or another caloric sweetener, has more than 25 calories per eight ounces, and does not contain more than 50% of milk by volume.

<a
