Big risks without nuclear power

Category : World News

Since March 11, 2011, there has been a backlash against nuclear power among the public. Many people now equate nuclear power with danger. I, however, feel that the Fukushima nuclear accident was more of a human/managerial problem than a nuclear one.
The Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant was never constructed to withstand an earthquake in the first place. This was actually written in the original construction plans. It was very old — running well past its suggested life span — and too many nuclear fuel rods were being stored together in a single place. This was human error.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Yoyogi-Uehara …

Category : World News

Neighborhoods are like microclimates, each with its own ecology of dining opportunities. Some are arid desserts with barely a ramen shop in sight. Others are lush and fertile, with a rich range of cuisines and styles. And then there are the hidden corners, seemingly overlooked, that sprout an improbably eclectic choice of eateries and drinking holes.
A case in point: the narrow slice of real estate where Uehara drops to meet the looming shadow of the hulking Yamate-dori overpass. Over a span of barely 100 meters, you pass a smart little Okinawan diner, a greasy Chinese kitchen, an artisan pizzeria complete with wood-fired oven, a funky fish-centric izakaya, a couple of cool bars and one of the friendliest little Thai restaurants in the whole ward.

Top 10 Financial ETFs

Category : Business

There are currently nearly 40 ETFs oriented to the financial sector. The following analysis features a reasonable list of ETF selections. We believe these constitute the best index-based offerings individuals and financial advisors may utilize.

ETFs are based on indexes tied to well-known index providers including Russell, S&P, Barclays, MSCI, Dow Jones and so forth. Also included are some so-called “enhanced” indexes that attempt to achieve better performance through more active management of the index.

The financial sector has been at the epicenter of economic and stock market woes during the 2008-2011 (and perhaps beyond) periods owing primarily to the housing bubble bust and collapse of security products created to accommodate rising real estate prices. As investors know this collapse has led to ongoing bailouts and bankruptcies. The sector is on the mend to start 2012. It’s quite remarkable that from mid-November to mid-February 2012 (a three month span) many ETFs featured have gained as much as a stunning 50%.
