NISA told Tepco to delay reporting looming explosion

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency ordered Tepco in March 2011 to delay announcing that the pressure level in one of the Fukushima No. 1 plant’s wrecked reactors was spiking to critical levels, teleconference footage released by the utility shows.
Images of Tokyo Electric Power Co. teleconferences during the initial stages of the nuclear crisis, as well as other materials and information, confirm that Tepco was forced to defer an announcement after pressure inside the reactor 3 containment vessel suddenly spiked to alarming levels around 6 a.m. March 14.

Matsui close to signing with Rays

Free agent outfielder Hideki Matsui is in the final stages of negotiations with the Tampa Bay Rays on a minor league contract, club officials said Monday.
Once he signs, Matsui will join extended spring training in Florida before reporting to Triple-A Durham, according to the St. Petersburg Times’ online edition.

Noda support rate up but more snub tax hike

Public support for Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s Cabinet has risen 2.6 percentage points from February to 31.6 percent, according to a Kyodo News poll released Tuesday.
But the telephone poll conducted Monday and Tuesday also showed 56.0 percent of the respondents are against the Noda administration’s plan to raise the consumption tax to 10 percent in stages, while 42.1 percent support the move. The number of respondents was not provided.
