A chart of yields across a number of fixed income sectors (via David Schawel). High yield bonds may be pricey on an absolute basis, but the spread to Treasurys remains a relatively large one. As for Treasurys themselves, they’re long on duration, short on yield: return-free risk.

The bulls are building a sandcastle on the cover of Barron’s, whose Big Money poll may be of dubious predictive value, but gives a great summation of the current conventional wisdom. Some areas of leaning to one side of the boat: Just 2% of those surveyed are bullish on Treasurys, and while 31% feel tech is the place to be over the next 6-12 months, not one thinks it could be the worst performer. A not-yet-IPOed Facebook makes the list of most overvalued stocks.

The action in Treasurys through 2011 and thus far this year reminds Jim Leaviss of 1993-94, where 2011 (1993) proved wonderful only to have things crash down in 2012 (1994). One key difference: “There’s no way that central banks are going to hike rates this year is there?” TLT -8.5% YTD after rising 28.8% in 2011.
